على متن قطار 'إكسبريس الصحراء' الفاخر المتجه من القاهرة إلى أسوان، عُثر على الملياردير وجامع التحف القاسي مقتولاً خنقاً بسلك معدني رفيع داخل مقصورته (رقم 7). حدثت الجريمة بدقة بين الساعة 1:00 و 1:15 صباحاً، وهو ما تم تحديده بناءً على ساعة رملية أثرية دقيقة كسرها الضحية أثناء مقاومته للقاتل فتوقف رملها عند تلك اللحظة.

باب المقصورة كان مغلقاً من الداخل بالمزلاج، لكن تبين أن شبكة التهوية العلوية المطلة على الممر تم فك مساميرها ببراعة وتسمح بمرور شخص بالغ. القطار كان يسير بسرعة ثابتة ولم يتوقف في أي محطة خلال هذا الوقت. جميع المشتبه بهم تم استجوابهم فور اكتشاف الجثة، وكل منهم قدم حجة غياب تبدو متماسكة.
